Meet Clara, one of NEFOS’s volunteers.
A sociology and economics student from the University of Toulouse, Clara recently undertook her university elective placement in Kenya in partnership with NEFOS.
Driven by her interest in food security, women’s empowerment, and future work with charitable organisations, Clara found a natural fit with NEFOS. The charity’s mission resonated deeply with her goals, leading to her working with NEFOS in Kenya as part of her university elective placement.
So, Clara, why did you join NEFOS?
“Initially, I was looking for an internship for my university, and I really wanted to work with a charity. I’ve always been interested in food security and empowering women, so when I found NEFOS, it really spoke to me. I reached out to the NEFOS CEO, Benta, and we immediately built a great rapport. After I came to England, the UK NEFOS team helped arrange my elective placement with the hub team in Kenya. While I was in England, I also ran a marathon for the charity before travelling to Kenya for my elective placement.”
How have you been involved with NEFOS so far?
“I started by running a marathon to help raise awareness for NEFOS, which was a wonderful experience. I handed out leaflets to increase visibility for the charity, using materials provided by NEFOS. The charity also supported my elective placement, giving me the opportunity to visit rural Kenyan communities. During my placement, I met the people we work with, documented their stories, took photographs, and gained a much better understanding of how we can help shape projects on the ground.”
So, Clara, tell us about your experience in Kenya.
“I truly had a wonderful experience. I spent time in Kenya with the NEFOS team, and I learnt so much. I visited rural communities, worked alongside local people on agricultural projects, and gained a deeper understanding of their way of life. That was definitely my favourite part. The local NEFOS team supported me throughout my placement, and I was very well looked after. I now plan to return to my university and share my experience with others.”
Would you recommend your experience of working with NEFOS?
“Absolutely! I honestly don’t have any complaints or negative feedback. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with NEFOS, and I would highly recommend the experience to anyone considering getting involved.”
What’s next for you?
“The NEFOS team has really appreciated my efforts and has invited me to continue being part of the charity and advocating for its work. I’m now working with the team to help develop the NEFOS LinkedIn page, and I’m excited to continue supporting the charity in the future.”
